MATCH VIEWS FROM THE MANAGERS

Last updated : 16 October 2005 By Ed

Fergie on the win:

"With us having players away on international duty I always worry about the first 20 minutes.

"I think we were fortunate to be 1-0 up at half-time - Sunderland played very well and didn't get any joy for it.

"They put a lot of crosses into our box, they put us under pressure and played at a very lively pace."

Fergie talks about Rossi:

"Anyone who has seen the boy play for the reserves knows he is a fantastic talent.

"I have a lot of options up front but I have been trying so hard to give him a chance.

"It is certainly not going to be the last goal he gets for us and I think you will see him figuring quite regularly for us from now on."

Fergie, generally:

"The only real disappointment of our season so far was the home defeat to Blackburn because we missed so many chances.

"We can't afford that, so hopefully scoring three goals at Fulham and again today will help confidence.

"Paul Scholes and Park Ji-Sung are getting closer all the time and we know Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo can score. It is just a matter of getting their first to get them under way."

McCarthy:

"I'm pissed off. (when asked about Rooney). "He's a quality player who everyone expects to win the World Cup for England. Why should I bother myself about him? I don't want to say too much about him because he is the one who has beaten us.

"We were disappointed to lose by 3-1 because that put a gloss on a scoreline that wasn't there for them. I felt we were playing well, but we got mugged on the break. Then again, the ball did fall to someone who I regard as a very special player in Rooney.

"Then we got mugged a bit. We allowed them to break on us and their goal knocked the stuffing out of us."
