MICKEY SEES A SHRINK

The NOTW reports that Mikael Silvestre has had to see a shrink after being left out of the United team.

Mikael Silvestre revealed last night how Sir Alex Ferguson drove him into such a depression he was forced to see a SHRINK.

In 48 hours the Manchester United defender is set to play a vital role in France's World Cup opener.

But he has confessed to a living hell at Old Trafford.

Silvestre is just regaining the confidence that was strangled away last season.

And he puts his recall to the French squad down to his new psychiatrists.

Silvestre said: "I thought my World Cup dream was in tatters just a few months ago.

"I was totally down and being left out at United.

"I was dropped a lot because my form wasn't good, but that made me even worse.

"I started asking myself what I was lacking, why the manager had dropped me, what I had to do to make him have faith in me again.

"That's when I had the most help from a private company I had been seeing.

"They helped greatly because they are experts in technical and tactical aspects and in mental preparation.

"They are called AS Optimum, directed by two friends of mine from Rennes, Eric Atta and Gilles Sero.

"They are very important to me and have helped get my head right."

Silvestre felt he had to seek professional advice after his rough spell at United.

In January the Frenchman was left high and dry when Fergie signed two defenders, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, in his position.

Silvestre admitted: "That was not good for me. Alex Ferguson told me I wouldn't get to play much.

"But I travelled to France to see AS Optimum a few times and we attempted to improve things together.

"I was desperate to find consistency in my game.

"I wanted to reach a level of performance which I could sustain and to reduce the number of matches where I'd let my level drop.

The work seemed to pay off when Silvestre, who had won back his place in the United line-up, was recalled to the France side for their March friendly against Slovakia.

He said: "All the work that we put in really came together in the first match I was recalled to the France team."

His form continued and he secured his place at the World Cup. He now is a certain starter against the Swiss in France's Group G opener on Tuesday.

Silvestre said: "What led to that was my performance just a few weeks ago against Arsenal — it was the best match of my career.

"I was up against Alexander Hleb and Emmanuel Adebayor, but I achieved the objectives I set myself.

"I put a lot of impact into those duels, how I had thought out the game. I had a huge amount of determination, and I also managed to set up Wayne Rooney's goal. It was a benchmark game for me and it led to me being called into the World Cup squad."

Silvestre had been ignored by France boss Raymond Domenech for almost 18 months, but that win over the Gunners was the turning point.
