MORE MATCH QUOTES

Van der Sar:

"I know for a fact Chelsea were watching it. For us, it is a statement towards them that we are quite determined not to let it slip.

"It was a very important three points. They are the matches that decide whether we will be champions or let Chelsea back into it.

"To score three minutes before the end, that is exactly what we needed on a tough afternoon."

Ferguson:

"I wouldn't have been happy with a point at any stage.

"I wanted all our goalscorers to be on the pitch.

"I have to admit I could not see it coming. Sometimes there are games where you get the feeling you would like to come back another day. I felt like that after two minutes. Our running was poor and the speed of our game was poor. Yet we scored so late on it could be significant.

"We are in a fantastic position but we have some difficult games left. Liverpool will be hard for us next weekend. I am not saying we are going to win but I know for certain we will not play as badly.

"The performances have been terrific but you are always waiting for a performance that is a bit flat where you have to dig something out.

"Give credit to Fulham, they made it a real cup tie, they never gave us time to settle on the ball. Coming back from the (Champions League) game in Lille which was really emotional, we were really flat.

"It was an uphill fight and we have to thank the two goalscorers for digging us out of a hole.

"It's significant winning the way we played. Fulham will feel very aggrieved and we can look at van der Sar's performance as the reason for winning the game.

"Ronaldo was fantastic, he showed such courage and I think he deserved to be man of the match and get the goal."

On his goal celebration:

"It wasn't quite a Steve Bruce moment. I did get quite carried away then but I'm too old for that now. It was a very significant result, particularly scoring so late on. It was the most difficult game we've had all season. To say it was smash and grab is putting it mildly.

"You are always waiting for a match when you don't play well but dig out something, get a result and tell yourselves 'That's a warning'. This is our most difficult game all season — but we won't play this badly again. Fulham were terrific but we ended up winning."

Ronaldo:

"When the ball hit the back of the net it was a fantastic feeling.

"Sixteen goals is good for me, but I have ten games left and I hope to score more. That is why I am working hard.

"The most important thing is Manchester. Don't think about Chelsea and about being nine points in front.

"After the Champions League I think the team showed it was tired.

"It was a very tough game and I think Fulham played very well. I'm very happy.

"Maybe Fulham played better in the second half. Sometimes football is like that - sometimes you play better and you don't win.

"The goal was for my team-mates, my club, but especially for Gaby - everyone says I ran to Gary but it was for Gaby - because he is my friend. He told me before the game that I would score, so I ran straight to him."

Coleman:

"Edwin was superb and showed why he's a world-class keeper. He is reminiscent of Peter Schmeichel at his best - even if players went through one on one against Schmeichel they rarely scored and it's the same with Edwin."

About Giggs:

"I remember Ryan turning up for his first squad. He looked about 11.

"He has been producing the goods at the highest level for 15 years now and nothing he does surprises me.

"If anything, he has been under-rated in the last few seasons because people have started to write him off.

"But he is without doubt, one of the best wingers the game has ever seen and he is still going strong.

"He may have lost half a yard over ten yards, but he still gets into those places because he's thinking quicker because he's got such a football brain."

More:

"There were no excuses for the ref not giving a penalty in the last minute when Van der Sar blatantly fouled [Heidar] Helguson. We raised our game today. The referee might for all I know have been taking a lift back home on their bus.

"It wasn't United's fault. No matter where they go, everyone wants to beat them and raises their own game. We did. It was a good game of football, with physical challenge given and accepted. We didn't want Rio Ferdinand off for raising his hands [in a scuffle with Radzinski just before half time], you only expect that for serious stuff.

"I'm very proud of my players and I imagine Alex would agree they shouldn't have got anything from the game.

"I don't believe for one moment United will think they have won the title now but psychologically, for Chelsea to be nine points behind, it is a massive task to pull that back.

"Probably five minutes before the end, Jose would have been ordering me a crate of wine. Now he will be letting my tyres down."

Fulham's Simon Davies:

"Van der Sar pulled off a terrific save for the first one. With the second one, if I didn't hit it so well it would perhaps have gone in the corner. United have been resilient and then they've broke away and scored.

"From the way they celebrated you could tell how much it meant to them and how much pressure they were under. The keeper took out Heidar so it's a great shout for a penalty. The ref had a lot of bodies between himself and the ball. We thought it was a definite penalty but it's a brave one to give in the circumstances."
