He said: "I suppose not being involved took away the risk of heart attacks. But it made terrific viewing.

"It reminded us of the levels we need to get back to. The Arsenal result reminded us that anything can happen.

"They were written off but ended up beating the most successful team in the history of European football."

Gary Neville:

"We are not happy about being out of Europe. To see other teams playing in great games in great stadiums is uncomfortable because it is something we are used to doing down the years. We want to play in those games. It is where we believe we should be and we want to get back to as quickly as possible. But there is not much we can do about it now. We have to keep our concentration on the games ahead of us and look forward to next season."
