Newcastle leading race to sign Dean Henderson; Man Utd plan Sam Johnstone talks

Newcastle are leading the race to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, 90min understands, with the Englishman keen to secure a permanent move away from Old Trafford.

Henderson has been unable to dislodge David de Gea as United's number one and his future at the club looks increasingly uncertain as talks are planned with West Brom's Sam Johnstone, who is available to sign on a free transfer this summer.

De Gea is also expected to negotiate a new long-term contract with the Red Devils, further limiting the chances of Henderson ever establishing himself in goal.

Newcastle were keen to take Henderson to St James' Park in the January transfer window and 90min understands that they are still leading the race to sign him - hopefully on a permanent deal.

The Magpies have told current number one, Martin Dubravka, that they won't stand in his way this summer if the opportunity to move arises. They will push forward with a bid for Henderson, who has lost his place in Gareth Southgate's England squad because of his lack of minutes, once their status as a Premier League side is confirmed.

Arsenal number-two Bernd Leno remains a target too, but Newcastle feel that 25-year-old Henderson represents a better long-term option, while they were also impressed with his previous loan spell at Sheffield United and short stint as Man Utd's number one.

Henderson's possible departure could smooth talks that United plan to hold with former academy graduate Johnstone, who left the club in for West Brom in 2018 without making a senior appearance.

That move followed a successful 18-month loan spell at Aston Villa, and Johnstone has gone on to make over 150 league appearances for the Baggies, breaking into the England squad despite their relegation to the Championship.

Out of his contract this summer, Johnstone could now return to United as De Gea's understudy, paving the way for Henderson to leave the club for the regular first-team football he desires.
