Nike have cut ties with Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood following his arrest and recent release on bail relating to allegations of assault, rape and threats to kill.
The sportswear giant had initially suspended their relationship with the 20-year-old and pledged to ‘closely monitor the situation', but have now ended it altogether.
“Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete,” a Nike spokesperson told The Athletic.
Greenwood has already been removed from video games like FIFA 22 and, while not formally suspended by his club, will not train or play in games until further notice.
Shirts bearing Greenwood’s name and number have been removed from sale on United’s online store and Megastore and fans who have previously purchased shirts from the club bearing his name have been offered the chance to exchange those items for another player.
Greenwood, who was arrested after girlfriend Harriet Robson posted graphic images of several injuries on social media, as well as a harrowing audio clip, has not responded to the allegations.
He was initially arrested by Greater Manchester Police on suspicion of rape and assault on Sunday 30 January. GMP were later granted more time to question the player, keeping him in custody, and further arrested him on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill last Tuesday.
Following questioning, Greenwood was released on bail a day later on Wednesday.
United have twice issued short statements stressing the club does ‘not condone violence of any kind’ and later reiterating ‘strong condemnation of violence of any kind’.
