NO IFS, BUTTS OR MAYBES

"I just wanted to tell Nicky that he had been terrific and, for me, the man of the match. Actually, I think all three of our players, including Paul Scholes, were the most influential in the victory.

The central defenders, Sol Campbell and Rio Ferdinand, were magnificent, but I think, in terms of going forward and damaging Argentina, actually winning the game, it was mainly down to Beckham, Butt and Scholes. I was glad to see David come on so much stronger in that game, because he had tired badly in the opening game against Sweden. When we spoke before the second match, I told him to try to pace himself better, not to go running around daft and using up too much energy. He managed that much better on Friday and I think he'll get better as the tournament goes on."
