Ferguson said: 'He has played fantastic - he was a real threat all night.

'It was a very good team performance. The attacking play was very good. First half we had to concentrate on the defending part, which we did quite well, and in the second half we improved on that. I think that sealed the victory for us.

'Obviously Ruud's second goal made it easier for us, but it was a good performance and I am very pleased.'

'We deserve the six points, and to win our first two games is brilliant. The players have done really well.

'It is a hard competition, as we all know, and to get ourselves in number one position in the section is brilliant for us.

'Now we can put the Champions League behind us and pick up next year when we have two great games against Juventus.'

He also praised fabien Barthez' crucial save from Roy Makaay, which came just seconds before United's crucial second goal, and added: 'We got a little break in the game when Barthez made a fantastic save.

'We went straight up the pitch and scored our second goal, which won the game for us. It emphasises what we have been saying about getting the breaks. A few weeks ago we weren't getting the breaks. That was a major one tonight.'
