Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Hints at Scott McTominay Return From Injury Against Watford

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted that midfielder Scott McTominay could make his return from injury during Sunday’s Premier League clash with Watford.

Having been a leading contender to be the club’s player of the season in the first half of the campaign, McTominay hasn’t played for United since Boxing Day because of a knee injury.

But the Scotland international resumed training as a late arrival at the recent winter camp in Marbella and is closing in on his return to action.

McTominay has been given Friday off by Solskjaer, with the level of his involvement at Old Trafford on Sunday to be determined by how he fares in a final session on Saturday.

“I think he might be in the squad. Scott had a rest day today, so let’s see how he is tomorrow,” Solskjaer said at his pre-match press conference, via ManUtd.com.

Should he feature against Watford, McTominay’s absence will have lasted less than two months, with his recovery process completed much faster than initially expected.

“I’m not surprised [he’s back so soon] because that’s the type he is,” Solskjaer commented.

“He’s a physical specimen, he’s a leader. He never shirks a tackle and he brings everyone with him. He can sit with Nemanja [Matic] and Fred or he could be one of the runners in midfield.

“Talking about that here today, we don’t really make enough runs past the striker. Scott used to be a striker so he’s used to being in the box.”

Mason Greenwood could be in contention to start if he has sufficiently recovered from the illness that forced him to sit out the Europa League trip to Belgium this week. January loan signing Odion Ighalo also has a chance of featuring against his former club.

“Odion is getting more and more minutes, but [whether he starts] depends on Mason as well of course, and how Anthony [Martial] is [after playing on Thursday],” Solskjaer said.

Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba remain sidelined with back and ankle problems respectively.
