Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Holds Transfer Meeting With Ed Woodward With 8 Targets on Shortlist

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer met with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to discuss the team's transfer strategy for the January window.

The Red Devils have lacked consistency this season and currently find themselves five points behind in the race for Champions League qualification. As a result, it is thought that they will look to the transfer market to try and give the squad a boost.

The Sun claim that the boss spoke with Woodward, assistant manager Mike Phelan and negotiator Matt Judge ahead of the recent Carabao Cup draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers to discuss the plan for the current window.

It is said that one of Solskjaer's primary focuses was on a new striker. United had hoped to conclude a deal for Erling Haaland, only for Borussia Dortmund to win the race for his signature, so now the boss wants to know what the other options are.

Lyon's Moussa Dembélé is suggested as an alternative, but the French side are reluctant to sell him to either United or fellow suitors Chelsea just yet.

Finding a new midfielder is also high on the agenda. Leicester City's James Maddison is said to be their top target, but Jack Grealish and Todd Cantwell have both been discussed as well.

Interestingly, The Sun also state that, alongside Juventus' Emre Can, Newcastle United's Matty Longstaff is also under consideration, despite being thought to actually want to strike a deal for brother Sean instead.

Regardless of which Longstaff is in their sights, or whether Matty is little more than a typo, they are supposedly seen as potential replacements for Paul Pogba, whose time at United is said to be 'all but over' as he wants to leave the club.

Finally, United chiefs will investigate the possibility of bringing in a new full-back, amid concerns that Luke Shaw has struggled to live up to expectations since arriving at Old Trafford back in 2014.

Leicester's Ricardo Pereira and Barcelona's Nelson Semedo are named as two possible options to replace Shaw, although that would come as a surprise as both players predominantly play on the right, rather than in Shaw's preferred left-back spot.
