Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provides injury update on Harry Maguire & Luke Shaw

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Manchester United pair Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw will undergo scans to assess the injuries they picked up in the 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

Shaw was replaced by Diogo Dalot on 34 minutes after pulling up with an injury, and Maguire had to come off on 67 minutes after hitting the deck holding his leg. Both players are vital to the Red Devils' backline, and are now doubts for their upcoming fixtures and the international break.

Solskjaer admitted after the game that the two Man Utd stars 'don't look okay' for the midweek clash with Villarreal, and said that they have to wait until the beginning of next week for the results from the players' scans before passing any concrete judgement.

"At the moment they don't look okay for Wednesday [against Villarreal] but let's see," Solskjaer said.

“Sorry, I can’t give you any updates. We will have to use today and tomorrow and Monday, or when we get the scans done, and see how they are.”

This is bad news for Man Utd fans, who finally felt they had landed on a solid back four, following the arrival of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. However, Maguire's injury means Solskjaer will have to rely on last year's starter Victor Lindelof to partner the Frenchman in defence.

Dalot will face a fight with Alex Telles over the vacant left-back spot in Shaw's absence, after the Portuguese defender spent last season on loan with Italian giants Milan. Man Utd host Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday, before welcoming Everton to Old Trafford ahead of the international break.

The pair may be a doubt for England too, with the Three Lions set to face Andorra and Hungary in October.

Solskjaer will hope to use the break as a chance to bring his stars back to full fitness. The Red Devils will have to improve too, having fired a blank in the 1-0 defeat to Villa.
