Paulo Dybala's Shock Telephone Call Ended Man Utd's Hopes of Summer Transfer

Juventus star Paulo Dybala was a wanted man in the summer. Manchester United seemed to be his most likely new destination, and Tottenham Hotspur came in with a dramatic late bid for 'la Joya'.

The entire Premier League fanbase was already imagining the talented forward in the red of Man Utd or the white of Spurs. He was going to set the division alight.

But as with all transfer sagas, we forgot to consider one important factor: the desires of the player. Dybala simply had no intention of leaving Juve, despite the club's willingness to negotiate a potential departure from Turin.

And this has been confirmed by Calcio Mercato, who revealed a vital phone conversation which took place between Dybala and an old family friend, Jorge Antun, which put an end to any possibility of a summer transfer.

In early August, a deal - which included Romelu Lukaku heading the other way - looked to be done and dusted between the Red Devils and Juve, and Dybala was about to be pushed out of the door at the Allianz Stadium.

But the transfer was completely blown out of the water when Antun, also part of the 26-year-old's entourage, arrived at Old Trafford and received a surprise phone call from Dybala himself.

While Antun was in Ed Woodward's office, Dybala dealt the deal a final hammer-blow, telling his friend that he didn't care about the money on the table and wanted to stay at Juve.

And that was the end of negotiations. United had no intention of signing a player who didn't want to join the club, and Juve were impressed by the star's desire to prove himself with the Italian champions.

It was a decision that has bore fruit for club and player. Dybala has been an important part of I Bianconeri's side this year, and he looks set to sign a brand new deal with the club in the summer. The superstar's contributions will be essential if Juve are to retain their place at the Serie A summit, starting with their must-win clash with Inter on Sunday evening.
