Police Working to Identify Those Involved in Attack on Ed Woodward's Home

Police say they are working to identify several Manchester United fans who attacked the home of the club's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward last night.

A group of disgruntled supporters wearing balaclavas hurled fireworks, flares and smoke bombs at Woodward's Cheshire mansion on Tuesday.

The incident comes amid significant supporter dissatisfaction over the way that the club has been run since the Glazer family became involved in the club in 2003.

Woodward, who has two young children, is understood to have not been present during the attack and Cheshire Police are now working with security services to find those responsible for the criminal damage.

"Cheshire police were notified of an incident of criminal damage that had taken place earlier this evening with a large group targeting a property in the Nether Peover area," a spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News.

“Thankfully no-one was harmed, and officers will liaise with security officials over the coming days to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and identify those involved.”

After news of the incident emerged, Manchester United released a statement of their own condemning the actions of the select group of fans.

"Manchester United Football Club have tonight been made aware of the incident outside the home of one of our employees," they said.

"We know that the football world will unite behind us as we work with Greater Manchester Police to identify the perpetrators of this unwarranted attack.

"Anybody found guilty of a criminal offence, or found to be trespassing on this property, will be banned for life by The Club and may face prosecution. Fans expressing opinion is one thing, criminal damage and intent to endanger life is another.

"There is simply no excuse for this."

The Red Devils return to on-field action tonight when they take on Manchester City in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. United face an uphill battle to reach Wembley after going down 3-1 in the first leg at Old Trafford.

Supporter morale should be boosted by the arrival of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon, who after a tiresome transfer saga finally appears to have agreed terms over a move.
