RIPPED OFF?

Sir Bobby Charlton thinks that Michael Carrick wasn't expensive despite Spurs making almost £16 million on him in two years. He also says United expect to be ripped off for players.

"Michael Carrick is a great player," he insisted.

"Once he has played his first game, I don't think anyone will consider the price we have paid.

"The deal is justified because we want the best.

"He is the type of player we have needed. He is English, and I don't doubt for a moment he will be a big success at Manchester United."

"We are Manchester United. If we go in for someone we are not really expecting to get them on the cheap," he explained.

"If we are the biggest club in the world we have to pay the biggest price. It is part of being the club we are and it is something we have to live with.

"People say Michael has cost a lot of money - but what doesn't these days?

"I know Tottenham spent a lot less on him, but he is a better player now than he was then."
