Rooney was fired up after completing a hat-trick that took United from two goals down to 3-2 in front and committed his sin in front of Sky TV cameras at the ground.
Of course the media and fans from other clubs have been hurt by Rooney’s outburst and are demanding that action should be taken.
Sky Sports issued an immediate on-air apology and the Football Association later said that they would examine the footage.
Rooney apologised via the club’s official website, He said: "I want to apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my goal celebration, especially any parents or children that were watching.
“Emotions were running high and on reflection my heat-of-the-moment reaction was inappropriate. It was not aimed at anyone in particular."
