Ferguson has said that Superintendent Mark Payne a “wee guy” from the Midlands with “a need to be noticed”.

Ze Vest Midlands police force officer said Wayne Rooney would have been chucked in the cells if he repeated his outburst on a night out.

But Fergie has hit back by saying: “Have you ever seen Wolverhampton on a Saturday night?

“Do police ever arrest anyone for swearing on a Saturday night? Dearie me, that is a good one.”

Rooney got himself in hot water for swearing down the camera as he celebrated a hat-trick that put United in command at West Ham after being two goals down. Rooney, was understandably fired up after his achievement, it was no worse than a lot of celebrations that go on up and down the country after a goal and nobody was put in any danger from it.

But the 25 year old striker was banned from this afternoon’s Premier League clash with Fulham and next Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against arch-rivals Manchester City at Wembley.

Fergie added: “Everyone has an opinion today. There is an issue in the modern world of a need to be noticed.

“There is a wee guy, sitting down there in the Midlands, probably never been recognised in his life, managed to elevate himself to what- ever it is in the police force.”

Hiding behind his computer screen, Supt Payne wrote on his blog: “If Rooney had behaved like that on Saturday night, I would have expected my officers to lock him up. People who are in positions of influence have an obligation to behave like human beings. It is not a lot to ask.”

Yes, because every police officer is a saint.
