He continues:

"We have never been a team that has started the season well at any time apart from 1993-94," he said, appearing unperturbed United are nine points adrift of the leaders.

"The stats show we have had more shots than anyone else in the league, made more chances than anyone else, so that is typically United. We have had periods in the past like we are experiencing at the moment where there is one element saying we seem to get punished every time we make a mistake.

"Fine, but more important than that from my part is until we get a back four we are not going to have a true assessment of the abilities of my defenders.

"Once you start changing all the time you get an inconsistency of results but that doesn't allow players to make mistakes and think they can get away with it.

"I'm not going to discuss individuals but as a team we have been making mistakes and it doesn't matter which part of the team is responsible we care about it and we address it. We always address mistakes."
