YOU WON'T HAVE IT EASY IN SPAIN

Gary Lineker has told David Beckham that he will have to
perform well if he signs for either Barcelona or Real
Madrid:

“Clubs like Real and Barcelona are used to buying great
players of the world so you have got to live up to it and
live up to it quick. That doesn't happen so much in this
country because we are not used to buying the best in the
world and we still don't.

“We might stumble across one or two by getting them early,
like Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry and Ruud van Nistelrooy,
but we don't go out there and buy Ronaldo and Rivaldo at
their prime and people like that. We don't spend that
lunatic money.”

Alan Hansen also felt that Beckham would have to fit in
quickly:

“It would be a big test for Beckham. He is a class player
and a quality player, but because of the status he has got
he wouldn't be given long to settle in. When foreigners come
to English clubs they are given maybe nine to 12 months to
settle in - I think Beckham would have nine minutes. If, for
example, he went to Real and started badly it would be
catastrophic for him.”
