30'000 EMPTY SEATS

No this isn’t about Man City’s match last night, but the
possibility of Arsenal and Spurs sharing Wembley. The
Telegraph have kept right on top of Arsenal’s plans for a
new ground, and as they look increasingly doomed it appears
as if alternatives are being looked into.

'Top officials have said it would be possible for Arsenal and
Tottenham to move to the new Wembley Stadium.

'Roger Draper, chief executive of Sport England, and Mark
Palios, chief executive of the Football Association, talked
about Wembley when they met at the FA's headquarters in Soho
Square recently.

'Palios has already made it clear he would have no problems
with Arsenal or Tottenham or both moving to Wembley.

'The advantage, as Draper says, is that Sport England would
get back the Lottery money of £120 million, as required
under the Lottery rules.

'The two clubs would also have to pay back the money provided
by various Government bodies amounting to some £40 million.
But for £160 million they would get a new stadium when
Arsenal are struggling to fund the £410 million Ashburton
Grove project and Tottenham want to leave White Hart Lane
but do not know where to go.

'There are some on the Arsenal board who feel a move to
Wembley would be advisable, but the majority are against it.
Tottenham, on the other hand, have expressed a willingness
to share Wembley with their arch rivals.

'Draper says: "It is complex but we can get round the
problems. What we need is a phone call from the clubs."'
