The brother of Manchester United soccer star Nicky Butt beat up two men after a row in a Chinese takeaway, a court heard yesterday

Simon Butt, 24, punched them in the face and his friend Anthony Etchells kicked one of them as he lay on the ground, it was said.

Prosecutor David Bentley said the attack happened when the Barlows were drinking with family and friends in April 2001.

They went to a takeaway in Stockport, Greater Manchester, where Butt and Etchells were believed to be ordering food with friends.

Mr Bentley said: "Words were exchanged between the two groups which carried on as they moved to the street.

"Mr Butt punched Terrence Barlow to the face, specifically his left eye, causing him to fall to the ground.

"As he fell Mr Etchells struck a further blow to Terrence Barlow.

Terrence Barlow, 28, said the attack happened "on a football day". He added: "United were playing so everyone had been out for a drink.

"It seemed they had had too much to drink. I didn't provoke them in any way."

Butt, of Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester, was arrested six months later after being named by witnesses.
He and Etchells, 25, of Denton, Manchester, deny assault. The case at Manchester crown court continues.
