The FA announced that "no action will be taken" against Thierry Henry "following an alleged use of the elbow during the Charlton v Arsenal game on Saturday".

However the FA, having considered the Henry incident, said: "The matter has not been referred to the video advisory panel and the investigation is now closed."

The Bitters have decided not to sack Richard Dunne after the player agreed to carry out a "specialist training programme". Dunne's future at the club was on the line after he turned up for training last Friday hungover and stinking of ale. City held a meeting yesterday morning between the manager Kevin Keegan, Dunne, the directors John Wardle and Dennis Tueart and the chief executive of the players' union (PFA) Gordon Taylor, the club said, "a decision has been taken not to terminate Richard Dunne's contract". City added: "Richard Dunne has accepted the seriousness of his situation having had similar disciplinary problems in the past."

Alan Shearer had to have four stitches in a head wound sustained in Newcastle's Champions League defeat to Dynamo Kiev. Shearer was injured in a first-half clash with Kiev skipper Andrii Husin in the Magpies' 2-0 Group E defeat. "He's got four stitches and he's got a sore head," said Bobby Robson, who subbed Shearer with 10 minutes on the clock. "There's no concussion, but he's got a nasty cut right in the middle of the head. I then saw him take another blow in the face and I thought 'That's enough for him'."
