"We are seeing the evolution of the squad. We've got a great compliment in the team now we have players in each category of varying age, varying experience and we are bringing that through," he said.

"That was part of the transition we went though last summer when David Beckham and Juan Sebastian Veron left.

"We have brought the average wage and the average age down and we are very comfortable with the composition in each category of the squad at the moment."

"We want to make sure we are up there challenging until the last week's of the season in the Premiership and the changes we have made in the squad mean we have invested £14m in the last few weeks. Before that Louis Saha was over £12m and while Liam Miller is on a free, those are significant investments in the world of football at the moment. Those were the manager's targets and we have brought them in and I am sure you will see us up there champing at the bit from the word go."
