Irwin on his Wolves move:
ALL THE LATEST NEWS ROUND-UP
Last Updated : 24-Jul-2002 by Editor"Everyone else at school followed Manchester United or Liverpool, but there were two us who supported Wolves. I don't know why because there were no Irish connections - it was in the John Richards era.
"There were only two television channels in Ireland, which both showed more hurling than football. But I always looked out for Wolves' results and watched them whenever they were on TV.
"All good things have to come to an end and I've no regrets about leaving Old Trafford. I had a fantastic career, but I want to play on for one more season and see this move as a tremendous challenge.
"I wanted to join a club with ambition - one that provided a challenge, and Wolves were the biggest and best that came in for me.
"I've had a great 12 years at United but I'm looking forward to working hard here and hopefully winning the First Division championship.
"A lot of people have said to me go out and enjoy it but I can only enjoy it if I'm winning.
"I know just how big this club is and I know they should have gone up last season. This year is going to be a big challenge and I'm looking forward to it."
Elland Road chairman Peter Ridsdale received a call from a Barca representative regarding Rivaldo, but did not feel the Brazil World Cup-winner would be suited to the Premiership. He told the Yorkshire Post:
"I got a telephone call from an agent acting on behalf of Barcelona who wanted to know if we would be interested in signing him (Rivaldo), but we said that we didn't want him.
"The situation regarding his wages was an issue, but you also have to consider whether or not he would be suited to the team and English football."
Eidur Gudjohnsen's agent has warned Chelsea that the striker could quit the club over a pay dispute.
Peter Harrison wants an urgent second round of talks with Blues chief executive Trevor Birch.
"I had talks with Trevor Birch last week about renegotiating Eidur's contract. He's had two good seasons at Chelsea and I need to speak to Trevor again as Eidur should get a pay rise.
"I'm not putting a gun to their heads, but if he doesn't get a rise, we'll have to assess his situation. And I don't know if he'll get a rise as it's difficult for Chelsea financially.
"But I've got to look after my client. If he moves, it has to be the right move. I don't know if the stories about Blackburn are true or not.
"Eidur's proved he's a top-class striker and his performances in the Premiership have alerted English and foreign clubs.
"Different clubs in England are interested and I've been contacted by various clubs abroad, although there's not a lot of money about in Europe."
From the Sun:
Gerard Houllier is planning to sign a convicted thug just days after missing out on Leeds bad boy Lee Bowyer.
The Liverpool chief wants Senegal World Cup star Khalilou Fadiga - having already signed two of his international pals.
But the Auxerre midfielder, 27, has a reputation for trouble.
Fadiga went to jail for a month after striking a fan while at Bruges. And he was arrested just before his nation's World Cup opener with France for stealing a £170 gold necklace in South Korean city Daegu.
Fadiga admitted the offence, claiming it was a prank - and the charges were dropped.
But Kop chief Houllier is still keen to complete a £5m move after landing his Senegal team-mates El Hadji Diouf and Salif Diao.
