Reports yesterday suggested that Liverpool are prepared to beat our offer for Smith. We offered £5.5m and are reported to be ready to go to £7m at the very most. Leeds value him at £10m and Liverpool are said to be ready to pay that.

Meanwhile the Telegraph and the Times report that Smith is willing to hold out at Leeds in order to secure a move to Old Trafford, his preferred destination.

The Telegraph also report that United will count on Leeds accepting less for Smith should the transfer drag on and he refuses to go elsewhere.
