ALL THE OTHER ROONEY ITEMS

Gary Neville reckons that Wayne will be well looked after at Old Trafford.

"I think he is coming to the right club to be looked after in terms of the management of his football career. In fairness to David Moyes at Everton, I think he has managed him pretty well. He hasn't over-played him and he hasn't flogged him. He's always used him at the right times and given him a rest when he has needed it.

"That will be the same at our place. You can't expect a player like Wayne Rooney to play Wednesday-Saturday, Wednesday-Saturday week in and week out. It is not going to happen and our manager fully accepts that. He started the rotation of the squad long before anyone else did in this country and will continue to do so.

"Wayne will be broken into the squad nicely. He has to find his feet, get back from his injury, get used to the team. He couldn't be under anyone better than Sir Alex Ferguson to look after him but I do say that he has been well looked after at Everton as well.

"Off the pitch as well, Wayne will be well looked after. At Manchester United there are certain things expected of you as a football player - on and off the pitch. He's enthusiastic and infectious and someone at 18 who has got such a fantastic talent.

"I just hope he is able to steer clear of injury and develop at Manchester United the way that I think everyone in the country would want to see him develop - for England as well."

Fergie has spoken of the first time Rooney came to his attention:

"It was about four years ago I got a call from my staff telling me about Wayne and to do something about him. So we showed a lot of interest in him when he was only 14, but we weren't able to get him. But this time we couldn't afford to miss out on him.

β€œIt has not been easy for the lad and I can understand the emotions at Everton, a big club with fantastic fans. But the opportunity to play in Europe was not there at Everton β€” and it is here.”
