Beckham, Scholes, Rio and Gary Neville all started for England and Wes Brown played as a second half sub. However they still lost 1-3 to Australia.

John O’Shea started for the Republic of Ireland, who won 2-0 against Scotland, and was replaced after 81 minutes by Richard Dunne.

Ruud featured on Holland’s 1-0 victory over Argentina for half the game, as agreed between Fergie and Dick Advocaat. However the Dutch manager is upset that Veron played for over 70 minutes:

"In our next friendly I will not meet the request of a club coach. I was curious whether Veron would only play a half and now I know. I will not accept this in the future."
