Gaven is 18 later this year and is seen as very much the rising star at Tim Howard's old club and he is earning some good reports for his performances in Major League Soccer.
If United do take the plunge and sign him on he will become the fourth American on the books. After signing goalkeeper Howard last year United also have promising defender Jonathan Spector from Chicago Sockers and striker Kenny Cooper from Solar SC of Dallas.
