‘The wife of a football fan seriously hurt in a fight hopes a photograph of him in his hospital bed will encourage witnesses to come forward. Manchester United fan Jamie Turner, 45, from Shropshire, was left in a coma after a brawl in Southampton on the last day of the Premiership season. His wife, Karen, released the picture on Tuesday in the hope that it would move people to provide information.

‘Sir Bobby Charlton has also recorded a special television appeal. The father-of-two has been in hospital since the attack on 15 May The former Manchester United star recorded the plea for witnesses to come forward for MUTV, the team's own television channel.

‘Mrs Turner said: "So many people have been following Jamie's progress and I'm sorry to tell you that there is very little to report. He remains in critical condition on a respirator in intensive care. I have released a picture of Jamie in hospital to show people what they have done to him and I hope this is not too upsetting for friends and family who know him.


‘"I would like to remind local people in Southampton that the best way to help us through this ordeal is to give the police any useful information about the people who did this. I will not give up until I get justice for Jamie."

‘Det Insp Paul Barton, of Hampshire Constabulary, said: "We are gradually tracking down witnesses but we still firmly believe there are a lot of people who witnessed this incident and know who is responsible who, for whatever reason, have not come forward. We urge them now to look at this photo of Jamie, and see the gravity of the damage which has been done."

‘The father-of-two, from Telford, was injured in a fight involving more than 20 people near to Southampton's St Mary's stadium. A large group of people started fighting in Clifford Street outside The Gladstone Club before the match.’
