ARSENAL IN DISARRAY

The Times reports on Madrid’s escalation in their efforts to bring Vieira to Spain:

‘Patrick Vieira’s possible transfer to Real Madrid appeared to move a step closer yesterday after an independent agent was sent to London to monitor the situation for the Spanish club. As Arsenal leave for their pre-season tour to Slovenia, Austria and the Netherlands today, the future of their captain looks increasingly likely to be in Spain next season.

‘Luis Vicente, a Portuguese agent who is not employed by either club, is acting as a go-between to start the process of a potential £30 million deal that could see Vieira leave Highbury after eight years with the Premiership champions.

‘Vicente, who has close links with Real, is keeping the Spanish club informed on the France midfield player’s situation. Vicente is sending information to Madrid after talking to various sources to gauge Vieira’s mood, but they do not include Steve Kutner, Vieira’s agent. Kutner has insisted that any move for Vieira, 28, must be done via Arsenal and Vicente has been careful not break any rules.’

Meanwhile the Sun carries the story that Edu is ready to move to Barcelona, with the player reportedly saying:

“Playing for Barcelona represents a dream for me. I’ve known of their interest in me since January. I already play for a great team at Arsenal — but for me Barcelona is a very special club.”

In the Telegraph Wenger once again comments on his future, although his reassurances don’t seem particularly convincing:

‘Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager who was recently linked with the German national job as well as the post at Real Madrid, yesterday said he did not foresee any problems in extending his contract.

‘The Frenchman, who has led Arsenal to three League titles and three FA Cups in eight years, still has one year left on his deal.

‘He said: "I am committed to the club, so I don't really worry about that, there is a good trust between me and the board. There is so much confidence that we don't even talk about it. I don't see any problems.''’
