AT LEAST THE ADVERTS WERE ENTERTAINING

It is often a mistake to underestimate the opposition, as others are finding in different, graver circumstances, so Gary Lineker's breezy dismissal of Liechtenstein - "They're just a load of bankers" - introducing Match of the Day on Saturday was guaranteed to end in tears.

In truth, watching England against Liechtenstein was pretty well what we had come to expect, those of us who have grown old getting the beers in and settling down to enjoy England demolishing "inferior" opponents. Not so much 30 years of hurt, as 30 years of going to the toilet and hoping it will have improved by the time we get back. The difference this time was all those exciting computer-generated advertising hoardings they had provided to divert us from the tedium of the action on the pitch.

The first time these constantly shifting perimeter advertisements were introduced - for a Channel Five match, I believe - they were generally seen as an unwelcome distraction, but on Saturday they were a positive boon, providing far more talking points than England's competent but witless performance.’
