Atletico Madrid 1-0 Man Utd: Player ratings as Erik ten Hag suffers first pre-season defeat

Manchester United's unbeaten pre-season run came to an end in Oslo after they were beaten 1-0 by Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag's men were the better team for extended periods of the match, but fell to a late Joao Felix goal in their penultimate friendly.

Despite Atletico's aggressive pressing early on, the first chance fell Man Utd's way when Tyrell Malacia escaped Marcos Llorente's advances to find Bruno Fernandes and he released Marcus Rashford on the break, though his near post shot was well held by Jan Oblak.

Anthony Martial should have broken the deadlock moments later when Jose Maria Gimenez misjudged a loose ball over the top and the Frenchman sprinted in behind, but he lost his composure and fired over when one on one with Oblak.

At the other end, Angel Correa spurned a great chance to put Atletico in front when the ball fell to him from an in-swinging free kick, but he sliced his shot and it ended up staying in play.

A cross from Llorente right through the Man Utd box was just missed by Thomas Lemar, who was put off by a challenge from Diogo Dalot as the Red Devils survived another scare.

The two sides got embroiled in a mini brawl just before half-time after Scott McTominay impeded Oblak, with both ending up in the referee's book.

Anthony Elanga should have worked the Slovenian a bit more at the end of a fine Man Utd move, with Rashford finding him in space just inside the 18-yard box, but the Swede's shot was very tame.

After the break, Harry Maguire did well to deny Matheus Cunha a clear sight of goal when sprinting through on the counter, before Fernandes attempted but failed to beat Oblak at his near post from a 35-yard free kick.

Saul Niguez somehow managed to sky a cutback from six yards out, while Anthony Elanga and Rashford were inches away from meeting a wonderful cross from debutant Christian Eriksen.

The Dane's influence continued when he placed a corner right onto the head of Maguire, but the captain somehow couldn't keep his effort on target.

Atletico took the lead with just five minutes remaining when Alvaro Morata held up the ball well for Felix, who in turn cut inside Diogo Dalot and picked out the bottom corner.

Fred received a second booking in stoppage time and Man Utd were unable to respond, suffering defeat for the first time under Ten Hag. They welcome Rayo Vallecano to Old Trafford tomorrow in their final friendly of pre-season.

1. Atletico Madrid (4-4-2)

GK: Jan Oblak - 6/10 - Made a series of fairly routine saves. Harshly booked for his role in the first-half scuffle.

RB: Nahuel Molina - 6/10 - Looked right at home considering he only just arrived from Udinese.

CB: Jose Maria Gimenez - 3/10 - Martial dragged the Uruguayan all over the place. Embarrassing performance and lucky it was only a friendly.

CB: Stefan Savic - 4/10 - Similarly terrible. Lacked composure.

LB: Reinildo - 5/10 - Booked for a cynical foul but he wasn't the only dark-arts offender.

RM: Marcos Llorente - 6/10 - Carved out some of Atletico's best openings.

CM: Geoffrey Kondogbia - 7/10 - Atletico's best starter, dictating play and running through midfield.

CM: Thomas Lemar - 6/10 - Roamed forward with intent but scarcely threatened.

LM: Yannick Carrasco - 5/10 - Played on the periphery and offered little.

CF: Angel Correa - 5/10 - Scuffed one good chance and that was as good as it got.

CF: Matheus Cunha - 6/10 - Always looked to cause Man Utd problems with his pace and movement.

SUB: Alvaro Morata - 7/10

SUB: Antoine Griezmann - 5/10

SUB: Saul Niguez - 4/10

SUB: Joao Felix - 7/10

SUB: Daniel Wass - 5/10

SUB: Axel Witsel - 6/10

SUB: Sergio Diez - 6/10

SUB: Rodrigo De Paul - 5/10

SUB: Koke - 5/10

2. Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

GK: David De Gea - 6/10 - Looked competent sweeping up. Barely called into action.

RB: Diogo Dalot - 5/10 - Was comfortable on the ball and kept Carrasco quiet. Turned inside out by Felix for the opener, mind.

CB: Harry Maguire - 7/10 - Occasionally found it hard dealing with Cunha's pace but was largely solid and useful, making several key tackles and interceptions.

CB: Victor Lindelof - 6/10 - Not as busy as his partner but was fine for the most part.

LB: Tyrell Malacia - 6/10 - Clearly technically gifted and has great delivery.

CM: Scott McTominay - 5/10 - Wore his collar up like Eric Cantona used to. Certainly didn't play like him. Played a few clever balls but wasn't involved at either end enough for a central midfielder.

CM: Fred - 6/10 - Industrious and energetic as always. Could have demanded the ball a bit more to help build from the back but still saw plenty of it regardless. Sent off late on for a needless foul on Morata.

RM: Anthony Elanga - 4/10 - A tough afternoon for the youngster. Failed to make the ball stick and was roughed up quite a bit.

AM: Bruno Fernandes - 6/10 - The creator of most of Man Utd's chances, though was guilty of giving the ball away too cheaply at times.

LM: Marcus Rashford - 6/10 - Sharp in spells but they were rarely prolonged.

CF: Anthony Martial - 6/10 - Made it an afternoon to forget for Gimenez and Savic but he couldn't continue his excellent pre-season scoring form.

SUB: Christian Eriksen - 7/10 - His range of passing will have been a breath of fresh air to the Man Utd faithful.

SUB: Donny van de Beek - 5/10

SUB: Facundo Pellistri - N/A

SUB: James Garner - N/A
