Nicky Butt made his comeback for the reserves last night and scored a goal after just seven minutes gone. It was the first time Butt had played for three months after injuring his ankle. He managed 54 minutes before being substituted.

After the match Nicky Butt seemed quite content.

He said: "I was just happy to get through it really and the goal was an added bonus. I'm pleased to get an hour under my belt."

Butt began full training just five days ago but could be in line for a return to first-team action against Chelsea on Saturday.

Fergie is looking forward to getting Nicky back on the pitch.

"We have a big spell of matches coming up now and you hope to have all your players fit for a period like this one.

"Getting Nicky back will be a boost and it will mean only Quinton Fortune of the senior players is still out.

"After the problems we've had with injuries this season it will be a nice position to be in again."
