BECKHAM: PRESS SUMMARY

Last updated : 27 April 2003 By Editor

Fergie will attempt to land Ronaldo should Real Madrid make a bid for David Beckham, claims The Sunday Express. But according to The Sunday Mirror, United want Patrick Vieira to replace DB07, yet all this could be immaterial because The People reports that Becks will stay and has told friends: "I want to remain at United. I signed my contract and I plan to honour it" They go on to say that he wants to ’patch it up’ with Fergie but DB believes it should be the manager who makes the first move.

The Independent expect a bid for 'the new Figo', Portuguese winger Ricardo Queresma, who is currently playing for Sporting Lisbon if DB goes and PSV Eindhoven's Danish winger Dennis Rommedahl is the man The Mirror expect to see on the right flank at O T next year.

Zidane touts for Beckham in The Sunday Mirror: "When Madrid come for you they make it almost impossible to turn them down and David Beckham would find himself in a similar position.

"It wasn't about the money for me - except the fact Madrid were prepared to pay that much said something about how much they wanted me.

Ronaldo is at it too: "I greeted him affectionately after the game on Wednesday night.

"I don't know if he is coming to Madrid or not, but I am certain it won't be difficult to find a place for him."

And Real’s president: "If Beckham wants to come we will take him.

"But this is not a Ronaldo situation. With Ronaldo it was a long-term plan, we were determined to go all out, there were no limits to get him.

"But for Beckham it's more a case of him telling United officially that he wants to leave. If he wants to come and the terms are right, we will complete the deal." There is also a possibility that Real would consider a swap deal for Beckham involving Ronaldo going to Old Trafford."

The Times: Just about the only source anybody was quoting in Spain about Real Madrid’s seduction of David Beckham yesterday was Naomi Campbell. Now there’s authority. The supermodel, one daily reported, had let it be known in circles where some Real players mix that Victoria Beckham had phoned her to say she’d be looking for homes in the Spanish capital next month. It did not add whether Naomi would be invited to the house-warming, nor in which language she was supposed to have discussed this with Madrid players after last Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Barcelona.

Real will no longer comment on the speculation that Beckham is to join club football’s most crowded catwalk. The coaching staff have been instructed to avoid the issue, the press office not to engage in it and even the executives have stayed mute since Jorge Valdano, Madrid’s spokesman on policy, told an Italian newspaper Real were not interested in signing Beckham and that Internazionale could go ahead in trying to get him without an auction. There followed a carefully-worded denial by the Madrid president Florentino Perez: there had been no talking between Manchester United and Real on the subject, he said after Wednesday’s European Cup quarter-final. Which is not to say there has been no contact between the player’s representatives and people who act for Madrid. There has been.
