BEHAVE YOURSELF SON

SAF:

"When I have to speak to a player about an issue, it is black and white to me. He is either doing the right thing or doing the wrong thing. The pressures on young players these days are huge but we know how to handle them at this club.

"The profile of young players now is phenomenal and Wayne will get the same advice and protection that we give to all our young players. But the Manchester United dressing-room is the best security there is. Players like Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville are all stable, mature professionals.

"That's the best thing of all. Wayne will see these players and how they have grown into what they are today. And I can assure you that's not by accident.

"So he's come to the club that can handle most things. It's the club with the biggest profile and the most attention, so we have to be able to handle things. All the players and staff here are professional and will look after Wayne, so I don't see it as a problem.

"Wayne understands, just as Giggs did and Ronaldo does, that we're not asking them to climb a mountain tomorrow.

"The important thing is that these young lads are major players in five years, not tomorrow. The big danger with young players is asking too much of them, too early. The important thing is to allow them to mature as easily as they can. It didn't do Giggs or any of the other young players here any harm. That way, by their mid-20s, they are top, top players."

Rooney himself seems to appreciate the need to act professionally at United:

"I don't think the manager has to say anything to me. As a professional footballer I should know myself and I do know myself. No one has to tell me how to behave on and off the pitch.

"I'm really excited. I think I've matured a lot in the past year, both on and off the pitch. That's important because there are always people out there who want to bring you down.

"When you sign for a club like United, there's always pressure. So I just want to get out there, play football and hopefully win trophies.

"Obviously the spotlight is going to be on me even more because I have signed for the biggest club in the world. But I am big enough and mature enough to handle that.

"I came here this morning and there was Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs sitting there in the dressing room. If I need any advice, I can ask them. The spotlight is going to be on me more because I have just signed for one of the biggest, if not the biggest, clubs in the world. There is going to be a lot more pressure, but I am big enough and strong enough to handle it."
