Blanc retirement on hold?

Will Blanc be persuaded to stay?
Sir Alex was quoted as saying "I'm going to have a chat with Laurent but it will be his decision. He is mature enough and he has seen enough football to know whether or not he wants to continue. Hopefully he'll change his mind."

"The fact that he replaced Stam might have had something to do with the criticism he has received. He was an easy target because our form wasn't great at the time he arrived. He doesn't seem to be affected by the criticism. When you have great experience and confidence in yourself you can get through things.

"But he's a fantastic footballer. Some of his performances have been sublime. In fact, you couldn't get better centre-half displays anywhere in Europe in some of the games."

It is widely accepted in the British press that Sir Alex made a mistake in choosing to bring Blanc to United to replace Jaap Stam who departed to Lazio. Blanc was seen by many as the cheap option. His lack of pace has cost United this season but to be fair apart from at Middlesbrough he has not cost United a goal this season.

The ex-France international had earlier announced that he was to retire at the end of the season. However, he could be persuaded to make a dramatic U-turn as there will be a chance to play in the Champions League next season, something not many thirty-six year olds get to do.

Meanwhile, Barcelona's Dutch centre back Michael Reiziger reportedly said that he is just weeks away from completing a £6 million switch to Manchester United.
