Bordeaux tipped for final attempt at Phil Jones deal

Bordeaux have been tipped to make a final attempt to sign Manchester United centre-back Phil Jones on loan before the January transfer window closes on Monday night.

The French club were initially credited with interest in Jones over the weekend, potentially offering the 29-year-old a route back to regular first-team football.

It appears that Jones wasn’t convinced, but Fabrizio Romano has reported that Bordeaux will try to persuade him it is a good opportunity after he turned down the opening approach. It is, however, still seen as a ‘difficult’ deal for the Ligue 1 side to pull off.

Jones had gone almost two years without a senior United appearance until he completed 90 minutes against Wolves earlier this month, the result of a frustrating long-term knee injury.

Having previously last played against Tranmere in January 2020, he made his comeback as a designated overage player in a pair of Under-23 games in September and returned to the first-team matchday squad a few days later against West Ham in the Carabao Cup.

Jones was recalled to the bench in the Premier League by former caretaker manager Michael Carrick at the end of November and has been named in the matchday squad for every game since, although the Wolves game remains his only time on the pitch.

The player is under contract at United until 2023 after signing a new long-term deal three years ago. He has been at Old Trafford for more than a decade is the club’s joint longest serving player alongside goalkeeper David de Gea.
