BOYLEY'S GROUPIES

This from a new column called face in the crowd:

‘Fans love new chants. At United we're lucky to have people who dedicate themselves to coming up with new songs, one such fan being Pete Boyle. A larger than life character, he's well known amongst the fans and whenever he comes up with a new chant you can guarantee he'll be doing his best to make sure everyone hears it. It's he and others like him who make United's collections of chants unrivalled by that of any other club.

Sometimes a chant comes along which catches on amongst the fans straight away. It might have been doing the rounds for a few weeks, in certain pubs, amongst a small group of mates, or fans who were in close proximity to someone trying to get it going at a recent match. But suddenly, it'll take off and everyone will be singing it.

I walk into the away end of The Valley, the Jimmy Seed Stand, as the latest chant [circa 1998 according to Boyle] is booming out from every area of the United section. I'd heard it in a pub near the train station before the match. Clearly and loudly the travelling red army are singing, "This is how it feels to be City, this is how it feels to be small. This how it feels when your team wins nothing at all." Borrowing the tune of This Is How It Feels by Inspiral Carpets (Oldham's contribution to the Madchester scene), the chant is another humorous dig at our Manchester rivals. It's simple but effective and clearly the song of the day.’

Glad to see that the new corresondent for the official site is only four years behind but City 'rivals' ??
