Bruno Fernandes dropped by Michael Carrick for Man Utd clash with Villarreal

Caretaker Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has made some bold selection decisions for his first game in charge, with Bruno Fernandes dropping to the bench for his side's crucial Champions League match against Villarreal.

Carrick is currently in temporary charge of the Red Devils following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking on Sunday morning.

The final nail in the coffin for Solskjaer was a 4-1 defeat to Watford that left United eighth in the Premier League table. Prior to that, his side had fallen to damaging defeats to Leicester City, Liverpool and Man City.

Things have not been going much better in Europe either. Going into matchday five United are top of Group F but their opponents tonight, Villarreal, are level on points with them in second, while Atalanta are just two behind in third.

In his pre-match press conference Carrick had ruled out any drastic changes to the side but he has made one surprising call in midfield, dropping the ever-present Fernandes to the bench.

In his place Donny van de Beek - whom Solskjaer rarely started - has been handed a spot in the starting XI.

In another interesting move Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho, who have both been peripheral figures this campaign, have been selected. Marcus Rashford, meanwhile, has to settle for a place on the bench.

Cristiano Ronaldo keeps his place up front though, while Alex Telles is at left-back as Luke Shaw continued his recovery from a concussion.
