Bruno Fernandes expects improving Man Utd to challenge for trophies in 2021/22

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes expects the club to challenge for trophies this season, explaining that the squad has improved in terms of both mentality and quality.

United have already signed Jadon Sancho since finishing second in the Premier League and losing in the Europa League final, with a deal for Raphael Varane also now very close.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have made considerable progress since Fernandes first arrived in January 2020, with the Portuguese personally responsible for much of that improvement.

“I think, as always, we have a chance to win whatever we want, or wherever we try to win because I think last season unluckily for us we don’t get to win any trophies,” he said, via BT Sport.

“We get to the final of Europa League but unluckily we don’t win. But, still, with the transfers or without the transfers, Manchester United will always be a tough opponent, we will try to win every competition we are included [in].

“I’m proud of what we have done because of course we want to win trophies and we know we have the chance, and we have the capacity to win trophies.

“But I see an improvement on the team, on the mentality of the team, on the quality of the team. And I think the team will improve more this season and we are going up better and better, day by day, and now this is a new season, a new chance to win something and to do something different.”

Defeat to Villarreal on penalties in the Europa League final back in May ensured that United’s wait for a trophy since 2017 extended into a fifth year. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired upon winning the 2012/13 Premier League, the club has only won three trophies in eight years and counting.
