Newcastle manager Robson is adamant that Everton striker Rooney would turn Sir Alex Ferguson's men into world-beaters again.

"You could make a strong case for Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United being champions this season," he said.

"But I believe if Sir Alex Ferguson is permitted to make a move for Wayne Rooney, it will be advantage Old Trafford. The kid is as close to a dead cert as you get in football and every club in the Premiership would want him. He has the intelligence to control a game, he carries a goal threat and he loves the big stage. At 18, his potential is limitless."
