CAN DO BETTER

"I set myself high standards and you want to keep to them. If you don't do it then you are open to criticism which I got last year.

"The press are paid to give opinions but that is neither here nor there for me. I know my game better than anyone else.

"I know where my standards are and I know when I am not hitting them. If I don't reach them then I know deep down.

"I didn't hit them on a consistent basis last year. I have time to learn and time to improve my game and I will be doing that.

"My season was all right and I enjoyed it but there is room for improvement. It was very encouraging that we improved the defensive record.

"Winning the championship was great. I couldn't have asked for much more. That was the reason I came here and to do it in my first season was a great achievement.

"I have no regrets about the transfer last summer from Leeds. Even if we hadn't won the league I wouldn't have had any regrets. It's a great club and I am very happy, surrounded by great people.

"We won't be resting on our laurels. We want to start the season where we left off. It will be tough because there are teams out there who are building their teams up."

SO CAN I SAYS KEANO

Roy: "My form, particularly in the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid, was not good enough and must improve"

"The manager will have been looking at that and already he has been bringing in new midfield players.

"Right now, I have to get better to make sure I keep my place.

"If you are not doing the business, the manager has to change it — and we did come up short again in the European Cup.

"The manager has to be ruthless. That is the right way to be in his position. You cannot rely on past performances alone to keep your position in this side."

However St Nicholas of Gorton says that Keano is still top dog:

"Roy is very hard on himself. He is a top player and will be for the next two or three years. We all change as we get older and I think Roy uses his head and experience more now in games.

"He is still as big an influence as he was five years ago. The day he is not, Roy will know."
