CAN THIS HAPPEN TO ANYONE NICER?

Graham Bean, the FA's compliance officer, met Ridsdale at Elland Road to discuss Hauge's role in Rio Ferdinand's £18.5m transfer from West Ham to Leeds in November 2000. Bean plans to interview several other people connected with the deal over the next fortnight and might then need to question Leeds again.

Ridsdale, who has denied any wrongdoing, has been cleared in an internal audit by the club after Hauge was paid around £1.75m for his part in three transfers. The Leeds chairman has been blamed by many fans for the club's serious financial problems and he is likely to be increasingly marginalised when a new managing director is appointed at Elland Road in the next few weeks.
