'A FOOTBALLER was SHOT by a gunman in a Scream mask yesterday as he sat in his car after being sent off.
The maniac shot several times through the passenger window and hit the player in the lower back. Sunday league team-mates from Liverpool-based Britannia FC and rivals Mail Social from Chester ran to help the victim.
Then they chased after the gunman and one managed to snatch his mask and weapon as armed cops arrived at Christleton, near Chester.
But the mystery attacker AND the victim, who had been sent off for head-butting an opponent, escaped in the confusion. Police sources believe the shooting was not connected with the amateur game. Cops think the victim may have been followed to the ground. The cup tie was abandoned with the score at 1-1. An eyewitness said: "I heard a few shots which sounded as though the gun had a silencer. It was like something from a movie. Somehow he managed to escape."'
