CARRICK CONFIDENT

"I was well aware of the comparison [with Keane]when I signed.

"It was something I wasn't worried too much about. People have spoken about Roy and understandably so because he is a legend. There was a gap when he left.

"The boss offered me the No 16 shirt and said `do you want it' and I said `yes, no problem.'

"I was well aware of who wore it before. He said it would be good for me and I was more than comfortable with taking it. It was an extra challenge for me to do well.

"I didn't question myself whether I was good enough. It was just another step up for me.

"I believed I was good enough but you have to earn it. I am only 25 and the best years for a player are getting later and later. So, there is definitely more to come. It gives you confidence that a manager such as Sir Alex has confidence in you.

"But as far as the price goes I didn't think I had to do things especially to justify it. I was just here to do a job. I was always confident as time went on I would get better and prove myself and I'm going some way to doing that.

"Playing in the Champions League and challenging for titles is something you dream about.

"No disrespect to Spurs, but while we nearly achieved big things we weren't challenging for honours like we are here.

"There are born winners in the squad; lads who have achieved an awful lot throughout their careers but still have that drive to win every single game. I have taken that on board."

About prospect of competition for places with the likely recruit of Owen Hargreaves:

"He is a top player and we're at one of the best clubs in the world, if not the best.

"So, you are always going to have top players coming here to improve the squad all the time.

"It's a challenge and if you're going for the same position, it keeps you on your toes. If he comes he will be a great asset."
