CARRICK SAGA FINALLY OVER

From the MEN:

Michael Carrick has denied that money was the motivation behind his £18.6million switch from Tottenham to Manchester United.

"This is a football decision, a decision not driven by money. It's an offer that has come at the right time for me both professionally and personally and I felt I couldn't turn it down.

"I've had a great time at Spurs and the club has been brilliant for me. There is an excellent squad full of top players and a number of younger lads coming through the ranks as well. I can only see successful times for the club in the future.

"Martin is a great manager and has done an enormous amount for my career. Without any doubt he has helped develop me into a better player. He gave me a chance when I needed it, stood by me and I will always thank him for that."

Martin Jol said:

"Michael played nearly all the games for us after coming on in the second half against Charlton the season before last and never looked back.

"He always gave his best and was a wonderful servant. I'm sure he will do well at Manchester United because he is very talented and we will miss having him around."

Fergie:

"Michael has completed his medical and has settled down fine. I spoke to him today and said to him 'I'm giving you the number 16 jersey' so he was delighted at that.

"I think that showed great courage because sometimes players are a bit superstitious about things like that - but he was keen, and said he would gladly take number 16.

"Carrick is a good footballer. He's a Manchester United player as far as the football is concerned. I think that showed in his appearance for England. I think he'll bring passing alternative to the way we play football."

On the lack of signings:

"I wasn't too worried to be honest with you, as I said before you have got to trust the players we have got. They had a fantastic season last year in the second half of the season. There's a great spirit here and if we add a couple, it's a bonus for us."
