'I'm a bit less optimistic since we lost two of our players. We saw a bit of light at the end of the tunnel when they said the suspensions would be quashed. I was really cheesed off when they weren't.

'You can't not love playing here.

'I've taken my grandchildren on the grass just to get a smell of it. Tour groups come round and they're besotted by it. It's more than a football club. It's like a cult. I know there are other famous football clubs — but it's crazy here and lovely at the same time.

'It was 1953 when I signed. There was a little cover that sheltered 1,000-2,000 people and the rest was open. When I arrived, the record attendance was 80,000 for a cup replay. It's never dull here. I come to Old Trafford for any reason, no matter how insignificant. I love it here. The philosophy's the same. Young kids. Give them a chance.'
