CHELSEA IN FOR ROONEY?

Nothing to back the story up (as normal), but it’s a sensible punt all the same. Shaun Custis in the Sun:

Money can’t buy Chelsea Ronaldinho — the man who destroyed their Champions League dreams. And it is highly unlikely it could buy Thierry Henry from Arsenal. They have tried numerous times and failed. But could it buy them Wayne Rooney?

Chelsea’s elimination from the Champions League in the Nou Camp on Tuesday cruelly exposed an omission in their ranks.

They do not have a fantasy player, a genius who can change a game all on his own, a footballer who strikes terror into the opposition.

They have many talented players, and Joe Cole has improved beyond recognition, but they do not have that something extra which separates the great from the good.

Chelsea need more than a goalscorer, they need a talisman — a figure of presence.

Now, how would the Glazers react if owner Roman Abramovich decided to raid his piggy bank and offer, say, £70million for the boy wonder Rooney?

Could they turn it down. Think how far that money would go towards paying off the overdraft at Old Trafford.
