Former New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC manager Chris Armas is set to join Ralf Rangnick's staff at Manchester United in the coming days.
The 49-year-old coach has been out of a job since being relieved of his duties in Toronto back in July following a humiliating 7-1 loss to DC United. By that point, TFC were rooted to the bottom of the Eastern Conference table with just one win from their opening 11 games.
But having spent five years in the Red Bulls system with New York, Armas should be very familiar with Rangnick's style and principles of play - the German has served as director of football for both RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig in the past, managing the latter on two separate occasions. Armas has also enjoyed some success as a coach, winning the Supporters' Shield with the Red Bulls in 2018.
Rangnick recently took over as Manchester United's interim manager following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and will remain at the club in a consultancy role for two more years.
As part of a coaching reshuffle - which has also seen Michael Carrick depart - Armas will join Rangnick at Old Trafford with his work permit already in place, according to former United States international and current ESPN commentator Taylor Twellman.
"Chris Armas will be on Ralf Rangnick's staff and will be announced in the next few days," he wrote on Twitter on Monday. "He was given his work permit this morning. Their history goes all the way back to New York Red Bulls."
Recent reports had suggested Man Utd were approaching current New York Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber to join Rangnick's staff, though those rumours are likely to cool upon the appointment of Armas.
Man Utd currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, three points adrift of the Champions League spots.
