"We all know Middlesbrough are going to come here and defend don't we," he said. "That's what they do but if you don't lose goals then you always have a chance.

"The West Brom match we needed games. We have improved since then.

"On Saturday at Sunderland, for instance, we controlled the match. Then you look at the second half against Chelsea and the performance against the Hungarians and you can see it is getting there stage by stage. We are getting towards where we know what we can get to. We are improving.

"The team is playing well now. There is good form about the team. On Saturday some of our football was fantastic. It was really good play.

"The killer touch wasn't there on Saturday. The players played as if they thought they were going to win the game. The killer touch wasn't lacking against Chelsea and we scored five against the Hungarians. But we need it tonight."

Well that last bit didn’t quite come off.
