The Guardian:

Ferguson said it was still possible for the defending champions to suffer the same fate as his United class of 1997-98 when they led the table for so long before being denied by Arsenal at the death.

Arsenal started March that season some 11 points adrift with two away games in hand - a gap wide enough to persuade one Manchester-based bookie to pay up on United winning the title. "If it can happen to a great club like Manchester United then it can happen to a lesser great club like Chelsea," said a defiant Ferguson before Fulham's visit to Old Trafford this evening. "I've seen these things happen before." United's manager believes this first weekend of February may be a defining moment of the season, with Liverpool visiting Stamford Bridge tomorrow. "I think Liverpool can win on Sunday, I really do," he said. "You have to hope these things can happen."
